ANIMAL
ABUSE, A PROBLEM BEYOND SOCIAL CONSCIOUSNESS
1. Keywords: education, injustice, empathy, animal
abuse, suffering and pain.
2. Introduction: Animal abuse has a broader meaning than that referring
to dogs and cats, the most common household pets. And, in many cases, it is a
problem that affects the environment. “There has been a lot of progress in
pets, but not so much in issues such as experimentation, hunting or intensive
breeding for human consumption; “Industrial farms are unsustainable for the
natural environment.”
The United Nations
Sustainable Development Goal number 15 pursues the protection of life in
terrestrial ecosystems. Among its objectives is to end poaching and trafficking
of protected species by 2030. According to the international organization, of
the 8,300 known animal breeds, 8% are extinct and 22% are in danger of
extinction.
3. Definition: Animal abuse is a behavior exercised by the guardian
towards their pet, which can cause suffering, stress or even lead to death.
This situation, which is terrible in itself, is accompanied
by something that is even more aberrant and that is that these acts are not
always condemned by our society as a whole. To prove this, just look at the
incongruous passion that bullfights or cockfights can generate.
4. Overview: Abuse or cruelty to animals can occur
physically and psychologically; consciously or unconsciously. Some of the forms
of abuse are associated with beatings, injuries, excessive shouting, movement
restrictions or not giving them veterinary care.
According to specialists in the human
mind, this behavior could be associated with impulses towards someone or
something in particular, in which the animal is taken as the replacement
object. While children when they exert some type of violence on animals, it is
because of the interaction that they perceive of adults with pets.
That is why those people who are more prone to these
behaviors are seen as individuals who could be victims of situations of abuse,
family violence or neglect.
